A Kinyarwanda writing system, taught through a learner platform.
Umwero is a writing system created for Kinyarwanda, inspired by the language's own sounds, identity, and Rwandan cultural heritage.
Umwero is a writing system for Kinyarwanda. Uruziga is the educational platform that helps learners study, practice, and use it.
Umwero was created to help Kinyarwanda be written through forms connected to its own sounds, heritage, identity, and learning.
Kwizera Mugisha created Umwero so Kinyarwanda could be represented by a writing system connected to its own sounds, structure, and cultural roots.
At the heart of Umwero is a simple belief: a people can honor their language by giving it a written form that reflects their own way of seeing the world.
Kwizera noticed that some spoken Kinyarwanda sounds were difficult to represent clearly with Latin-script writing. Umwero grew from that concern.
Umwero turns sound, shape, and cultural memory into a writing system so learners can connect language practice with Rwandan identity and heritage.
Creation Timeline
A short path through the moments that shaped Umwero.
2017
Kinyarwanda writing questions become clearer
After secondary studies, Kwizera Mugisha visited his elder brothers in Nairobi and noticed how related Bantu languages used different writing choices for sounds that Kinyarwanda also needed to represent.
2019
The circle becomes the starting point
In his first year of Computer Science, Kwizera began shaping Umwero from the idea that a circle does not change, connecting the writing system to Imana and the idea of beginning and end.
Design foundation
Characters are tied to sound and culture
Some characters were intentionally connected to Rwandan cultural symbols, while others were first created intuitively and later found cultural meaning.
Three Cultural Foundations
Meet the cultural roots that help explain the spirit and shape of Umwero.
Imana
God and the circle
In Rwandan cultural thought, Imana is connected to creation and continuity. The circle, with no beginning and no end, carries that idea into the visual foundation of Umwero.
Inka
Cattle, sustenance, and Inyambo beauty
Inka is presented as a central root of Rwandan culture: a symbol of prosperity, milk, family life, and social meaning. The Inyambo cow informs the visual meaning of the letter A.
Ingoma
Drum, throne, and kingdom
Ingoma is described as more than a drum; it also carries the meaning of kingdom and throne. Umwero connects this idea to cultural authority and naming marks.
